How this 'mini-reunion' came about...

I received a phone call from Gene Folliard on Monday, May the 19th saying that Skee Stansbury was going to be in Virginia for a family reunion. Gene asked me if I thought I would like to come to his home in Urbanna for an afternoon of getting together with Skee and a few others for a bushel of steamed crabs, etc. I said that it sounded like a great idea and to count me in. Gene asked if I knew of any other IMPS who would like to come. I immediately thought of Dwight, Larry, and Tee. Gene said he would call Larry and Tee and I called Dwight.

So, I arranged with Dwight to pick him up Saturday morning the 24th and drive to Urbanna thinking that Larry might like to ride too. Subsequent phone calls from Gene indicated that Larry would be going on his own so it was just Dwight and I. Gene also indicated that Tee and Skee would be going together from the Richmond area. All was set!

I picked up Dwight and we drove the hour and a half to Urbanna. It had been a long time since I had been up that way as my grandfather had a ‘farm' in Deltaville and I had some basic familiarity with Urbanna, Saluda, and Deltaville. My how time has changed things! I remembered small country towns with two-lane country roads back then. Now, Route 17 from Newport News to Yorktown is very congested with numerous traffic lights and lots of traffic; and four lanes all the way! I also remembered that the York River Bridge toll was $0.75 and is now $2.00.

En route, I had gotten a call from Gene who seemed a little panicked because no one had arrived yet. Dwight and I navigated around Urbanna from Gene's directions and easily found the Folliard Homestead and what a lovely place it is, too. By the time Dwight and I arrived, all of the others had gotten there so we were the last ones there. Gene and Jane's hospitality was fantastic. The weather could not have been any better and everyone enjoyed working through picking out crabmeat. Such a tasty delicacy! There were also other things to eat: hamburgers, hot dogs, and all the fixin's. Not to mention just about any adult beverage one would want.

We really had a fine afternoon getting to hear about Skee's family in Texas and his life-long work selling cars. He did very well on both accounts: fine family and successful at selling autos and now retired. You can see a picture of his grandchildren elsewhere on the Frederick web site.

All in all, I couldn't have asked for a better Saturday. Weather, good and old friends, driving conditions, and everything else was just perfect.
